To answer your gas tube question, the G&G and G&P share a similar setup. The gas tube fits into a little space on the upper reciever, through the D-ring (inside), and down through the front grip into the front sight (or into that retaining triangle behind it)...

It's not a structural part of the gun, and you can get away without it, but I'm sure if you spring for a G&P front end, you'll wind up with one anyways.

If you're going for the M16 feel and not worried about all those parts, grab yourself the longer barrel, and the grips, and see what you need from there - that'll be the easiest way to find out what fits. I want to tell you that you can just pull the front sight off and it will fit, but I'm not sure.

Same goes for the D-ring and other bits that hold the grips on.

I lucked out with my G&G M16 . I found a completed M4 front end and the only thing missing was a flash-hider. I got it all for $100 ...
