Sentry Gun
I am not sure if this is the right section for this but its an awsome concept. It is for paintball, however I figure that it would be easily converted to airsoft.

Our team has the software for running one of these units, and we'll be building one in the relative near future, probably just hooking it up to a Kraken or two. We anticipate it will be a tremendous asset as an area denial weapon as the camera it will be working off of while motion sensing, is infra red which means it will also see in dark or low light conditions as well.
Something we'll be addressing though, is making provisions to "kill" the sentry gun. Unless there is a means to do this (without actually damaging the unit) and without rules to cover it's use in a game - the sentry gun can't be killed by virtue of it's inability to call hits. I don't think anybody want's to play against an invulnerable BB hoze, and still be expected to call their own hits. To that end, we're looking at building some sort of superstructure around the device, partially to protect it and partially so we can mount something like a small knock down target on it which will act like a switch. When knocked down (by incoming fire), the power to the unit is killed, thereby disabling it. Naturally, the knockdown target or switch won't be oversized and in neon colours - but it will be there and it won't require a hole in one shot to take out either. Something else to think about is where to site the unit in. Ideally, you want it to engage targets at maximum range. Reason being is when it scores a hit - the victim can get up, and easily move out of range on their way back to the spawn so they're not getting drilled in the back for several seconds as they scamble to get out of range. The sentry gun certainly won't know whether it's hit you or not and it will hammer any movement it "sees", regardless of whether that target is dead according to game rules or not. Anyhow my main point is I think anyone using one of these or considering using one of these needs to also appraoch the gameplay ramifications responsibly when introducing something like this to a game. In my oinion, the best place to start, is by trying to imagine yourself in the boots of the guy who stumbles accross one of these. Cheers!! Brian |
