building my own mechbox....
heres the story
I'm extremely mechanically inclined. and I am an Avionics Tech, So Electronics are easy I have a sportline. and eventually plan to convert this to a CQB gun. so range accuracy means little. There for I plan to keep it mostly stock aside from changing a few pieces from plastic to metal I am trying to find info on how I can start to build a new mechbox for my next gun. Can one Buy pre packaged part kits to build one from scratch? do I need to find the box somewhere and then track down some parts. THAN buy the pricey stuff? Just having a ahrd time finding this stuff online. Or should I just go and Buy a prebuilt V2 mechbox already done up all nice for my field gun? M15a4 BTW Shawn

If your going for a pre-built set up, Systema complete mechbox's are apparently really solid. I have also heard that G&P complete box's are nice too
Also, you could consider building off the base of one of those modify Smooth FTKs. Thats what i would probably do, its most of your components in one box, plus, you get shim less gears, which is a nice plus

Yeaps, they are like the most awesome gears ever, i dont have them, but a friend of mine does, and i was VERY impressed with them, too bad they are a hundred bucks : \
The kit is 200ish on airsoftparts.ca, and even if you didnt want to built a complete box, it has most of the components in it, so you can upgrade the crap out of you box, but keep the wiring, switches, .ect EDIT: This!

I really need to get a handle on the differences in m4 m15 m16 ect, and what matches the m15a4 I have. I thought they were all a m4 base, but some things are listed for the m4, some say m16 and others say 15.. is it all the same fitment etc?

Well, technically, they are all AR-15's But, M4s are what US military uses, the shorter guns, usually with retractable stocks, M16s are also used by the US military, longer, and usually have full stocks. What model of CA M15A4 do you have? All airsoft AR-15 variants use the same basic mechbox, so the only difference between those kits really, is the cylinder port size, longer barrel (M16) needs an unported cylinder, Short M4s need a ported cylinder. You said you wanted a CQB gun? The one i linked you is for short M4s Hope that helps, -Ben

well it a sportline classic army. but thats being made into a cqb gun. and keeing the standard CA mechbox. with a new springbushings.
I plan to build a gun off the magpul Dark earth body and from there up. a field gun. so would rewuire a longer barrel If I choose to go with that upgrade, what would I then want to choose for a basic box so I have something to put that kit into? basicly> what cheap mech box is worth getting simply to upgrade?

Well, have you considered just sticking with your stock CA box for now? Those kits aren't really made for building scratch box's (though they still can) they are FTKs (full tune up kits)s used to bring a stock mechbox up to more of a performace build. If it ain't broke, why fix it? But, if you must, KA mechbox's are about 40 bucks i think.

G&P 7mm. Great mechbox for the price, and will fit the Modify gears, too.

Try to stick with one brand for best results.
You can buy a complete 8mm G&P drop in box that shoots 380-400 for $200 from AirsoftParts.ca. You would also need the trigger electricals which I have no idea you can find, and to have the screws for it. Building a mechbox yourself would cost about or more than buying a drop in. A cheap drop in mechbox would be the new JG reinforced ones with ball bearing bushings. I heard they're great that comes with a mosfet. If you want a reliable one, spend $265 and get a Systema drop in, and that doesn't include a motor, again 380-400FPS at AirsoftParts.ca. |

Again, what i would do, is buy a modify SMOOTH FTK, drop it into the CA box, and leave the rest of the CA there (the switches, fire selector's .ect)
Also, consider a new motor, If you have th cash, a magnum, Other wise, Gaurder high-torque are great, or G&P M120 for higher speed set ups

Hey Sean, bring it over and I can teach you everything you need to know.
You can also get the parts you need on one of my orders Buying a complete mechbox wouldn't be bad, but I'd advise against the systema ones, they're really old and alot of the parts are out-dated and better ones are being produced for cheaper... + With the systema full mechboxes you're almost 100% guaranteed to shatter your piston. Modify Smooth FTK with a sorbo pad is what I'd recommend. Last edited by Amos; July 2nd, 2009 at 03:19.. |

It's obviously easier to just purchase an already built mechbox, but it is a fun project to build your own, but ONLY if you know what your doing. |

Well what ever way I got I need to go new.
I will be picking up a new magpul body. This will be my OUTDOOR field gun. so I want it tight, fast reliable etc. The current CA mechbox I will probably upgrade the bushings and spring possibly. but it will be going for indors. a CQB gun. so at those ranges I'm not so overly concerned about the rest of the box. Thats where I'm sitting right now. I will eventually need 2 EDIT: So should I upgrade the hell out of my CA box, and keep it outdoors. and when I do a CQB gun simply buy a cheaper drop in for that gun? 150 buck range? That FTK is a lot of freakin money. lol
