He was asking for personal experience on them and be careful with ArniesAirsoft "overall rating" cause at times the reviews are written by anyone and someone can put a rating of 1 and screw it all up. I believe rexdlu had a G&G UMG

I personally like the MP5 (TM MP5, sorry I never used a G&G but its similar build) just felt right in my hands, but if you don't care about looks I would choose the G&G UMG cause it has a

Version 3 Gearbox

Which is slightly easier to work with than the MP5 Version 2 gearbox as well as the UMG comes with that Metal piece that holds the motor in place.

Whereas the MP5 you have to slip in the motor wires through two small holes and then connect it to the battery and there is a little screw that adjust the motor height which can be lost or you have to re-adjust if it gets loose.

If you are expecting to do your own modifications I would go with the UMG just because of its Version 3 Gearbox and that metal piece that holds the motor in place

Well they are pretty much the same length and both are meant for CQB if you want to be tacticool get the UMG

As it has the rails in the front to add a flashlight and laser, believe me a bright flashlight is very useful for blinding people in CQB, though it gives away your position if you use it correctly it works. I can't count how many times I saw a bright flash and then BBs hitting me.

I also see you wanted a Thompson if you have not test fired one already I highly suggest you do it. Its a interesting gun to own but I found the MP5 and UMG to be of better use, with sighting enemies and rail attachments.

UMP Pros:
-V3 gearbox (pretty much bullet proof)
- Rare (could be a con)

Cons:
- Mags hard to find
- Accessories hard to find
- stuck with mini battery

MP5 Pros:
- Mags are easiler than crap to find
- Accessories up the yinyang. Next to the Armalite series, probably the most accessorised aeg going.
- choice of mini or large battery depending on the stock (slither stock gets a mini, full stock gets a large.

Cons:
- Breakage prone V2 gearbox if overbuilt/over fired/used in very cold temps (-10°C)
- Seen all over, not rare

Not to mention there are more internal upgrades available for the MP5 series. Other than the usual V3 gearbox upgrades, I'm not sure what internals would be available for the UMP.

Actually Version 3 Gearbox parts can be found at www.airsoftparts.ca

Jugglez made my day when I use to have a Ver 3 gearbox, I found it to be easier to work with, but now I have a ver 6, now that gearbox is easy as pie to take apart and put together

As I said, other than the usual Version 3 gearbox parts. Other than the selector, nozzle and trigger (and maybe the cylinder and motor mount if you're picky), a V3 is a V3 is a V3. I'm talking specifics, hopup chamber, tightbore inner barrel (there's probably something available that fits), and other external upgrades like iron sights, different/better stock, foregrip, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I think the UMP is a cool gun and there's nothing wrong with it. I'd like to get one for my collection, but for a first gun, perhaps get something that's a bit more common. Mags for the UMP would be difficult to import as they had fake rounds showing.

Id the G&G UMP even still available? I did a search in WGC, UNcompany and Redwolf and none of them show it in their listings, just the STAR and Aires (I know know it's a STAR).

Ah yes you are right I totally forgot about the usability of the item. I am usually functionality based. But yes if you are starting out with this as one of your first CQB weapons then

Get the MP5, since like Darklen said parts for it is easy to find especially a box of midcap magazines work great even the cheap Plastic King Arms if you are tight on budget

Buy an MP5 IMO.

Everything about it is either easier or cheaper.
main thing: large battery on a CQB gun will give awesome trigger response and you wont be the one with a dead battery.

Lean towards the MP5 my friend, tons of external parts and internals available everywhere and MAGS galore cheap mags too, I ran and crawled in dirt and they held their own

King Arms Mags - I used them when I first started out

Another down side of the UMP - storing the mags. They won't fit in standard mag pouches. They will fit in the same mag pouches as P90 (also a pain in the ass).

Otherwise though, it's a beautiful gun. But mechbox issues aside, I'd still go for a full stock MP5. Everything is easier to get, and will hold a large battery. And fuck what happens to the mechbox shell. A good reinforced V2 mechbox with an added sorbo pad will last a long time without breaking. Makes the V2 weakness sort of moot IMO.
