The gun is a G&P Commando. I think Cactus could be of some help as he seems to be a G&P guy. I tried to move it a bit with pliers, but no dice. So I guess I'm going to have to get a wrench?
Not sure about what other info you might need. |

You can use the wrench and not damage the splines at all. Or you could try the hillbilly approach and use channel-lock pliers and hope for the best. I've removed more than 1 G&P barrel nut, some with my hands only and some with pliers. But a wrench is $30 or less and works best.

How did you do it with your hands and the pliers? Did you just grab the splines and twist? I want to try it without the wrench because that plus the rail is going to be too much for me in the time frame i'm looking at. I need to get it done by next week for a milsim. If its a no go on the pliers tactic, then i wont risk damaging the splines and ill just get those hand guard rails for now. Ive gotta put an AN PEQ somewhere...

Grab the splines tightly with a large set of channel lock pliers and turn, keeping steady grip to avoid the pliers turning on the splines. Use 1 hand to hold the upper (if you don't have a vise) and use the other hand on the pliers. It's not the best way to do it, that's for sure, but it can work in a pinch if you lack the correct tools.

"Strap Wrench" is another term for those type of wrenches.
Also, make sure you have the gas tube out, so that it's not blocking movement of the barrel nut against the upper receiver. |

Yeah the gas tube is removed. I removed the front sight assembly and the gas tube held the front part that held the end of the grips together. So we used a screw with a spreader on it to hold the two pieces together. So then the bottom grip goes on like normal. But yeah I don't know how well that wrench would work There isn't a lot of room to put it. I have to remove the nut to get the delta ring off don't I

Uh, I know with my jg delta ring i just just pull it back and turn the slits together and it pops off the barrel nut

G&P uses a real-steel style barrel nut. You can get a real AR15 armorer's wrench for $30 or less and do the job right.
Guarder also makes a nice one, for about the same price.

This is the Red/Green approach...because I'm cheap...
Wrap a couple of layers of double sided tape around the ring. Then wrap an old t-shirt or rag over it, just one or 2 layers. It'll give the pliers something to bite on a bit. Big pliers...so you get some leverage. Remember...you're just trying to squeeze hard enough to not slip. Squeezing too hard and you could be actually compressing the ring and jamming it on the threads. The rotational torque is what unscrews it. Strap wrench will work, double sided tape will give it a bit more grab as well. A drop of penetrating oil into the threads couldn't hurt at this point. You could also try to tighten it a little and then loosen it in case there's something (i.e. paint/finish/corrosion/crud) jamming the threads. And yes...make sure the gas tube or anything else that may be pinning it in place is removed first... Good luck. |
