PTW MAX upper receiver/cylinder units compatibilities...
Hi,
This is for PTW owners and people who has had experiences with them.... I already did a similiar post on a Systema Forum, but I know that not everyone here is a member to that Forum, and I wanted more opinions...so here it goes... I have a question... I have a M4A1 Max at the moment, I am debating on purchasing a M16A3 Max, now here is the question... I would like to keep the lower receiver from the M16A3 Max and swat the upper receiver from the M4A1 at anytime with the M16A3 Max and vice versa...then I would sell the lower receiver part from the M4A1 Max since I would not be needing it... ...just like changing the battery or cylinder fast and easy?....but instead I can change upper receivers as fast and easy?..... Is it compatible, can it be acheived without any modifications?... Another question, is the cylinder units for the M4A1 Max compatible with the cylinder units for the M16A3 Max?....are they the same and can be swat between both upper receivers? ...to give you the big picture, I have one 150 red cylinder, I have one 130 gold cylinder, I have one M16A3 lower receiver "and compatible batteries", I have one M4A1 Max upper receiver, I have one M16A3 Max upper receiver....can this system work for me?... Thank you kindly for your responses.... Mike |

It would be easier for you to buy a real upper and the M16 barrel set. Then, get yourself a custom inner barrel from Doff in M16 length.
What you are proposing will give you no performance advantage, as the M16 and M4 use the same inner barrel. Everything else will work fine. Or, you could keep you M16 lower, and make it semi-auto only by installing a block on the selector track (takes about 5 minutes to do), then maybe you can use that M150 for a huge range advantage.

Yes you can swap uppers between M4A1 and M16A3
Yes the cylinders are compatible Yes this will work, assuming both are MAX I had a similar idea where I swap my CQB-R upper for an M16A3 upper to go from CQB-R to SPR but decided its worth getting two whole guns instead. |

But the M16A3 barrel is much longer, at least it is in the barrel sets you can buy from redwolf. Both outer and inner barrels are much longer for an M16A3 than an M4A1.

No they aren't. Trust me, I've worked on a brand new M16A3 MAX (2007 version) just this summer. It uses an M4-length inner barrel and the M16 cylinders are discontinued for Gen 1-3 guns (M90-M130).

Hmmm...strange. Where the previous generation inner barrels longer? Its just that all the pics of barrel sets I see online have an M16 inner barrel of equal length to the M16 outer, same for the M4A1 and CQB-R.

Gen 1-3 used full length inner barrels. My old Gen 1 has that. But new MAX guns use the M4 length barrel, and the barrel sets you get from Systema include the M-length barrel as well. They only currently make 2 inner barrels in 6.04mm. The 10.5" for the CQB-R and M733 and the 14.5" for everything else.

so McGuyver to what I understand "thank goodness for google"...man this is so technical for me and complicated, too bad you do not live closer, we could go out for coffee...but anyways here it goes...
get something like this 16" Varmint A4 upper receiver like these?... http://www.eaglefirearms.net/rra_upper_assy.htm and a custom inner barrel from Doff in M16 length or longer ... who is Doff ? all this on my already owned PTW M4A1 Max?...and I will not need to spend another 2000$ for the M16?....how about the electronics and cylinder that kind of stuff for airguning?.... so to what I understand I could get a 20" A4 upper varmint receiver and 20" custom inner barrel.... is that correct?...Again, how about the electronics and cylinder that kind of stuff for airguning?.... I really like this upper http://www.impactguns.com/store/RRA-AR0560.html My local gunsmith is going to like me.... Last edited by leblanc74; November 23rd, 2007 at 02:31.. |

Now, you are showing gun parts that are in the U.S.. You would need to import them, but unless you have a real AR and a restricted PAL, good luck. But you can buy those sorts of things already in Canada with no license required. If you did buy a real complete upper, you would need to machine out the real barrel, remove the chamber, etc. It would be easier and cheaper to buy the barrel set from Systema for $200 (or really Redwolf or whoever), buy a stripped flat-top upper for about $200 (Stag Arms, Bushmaster, Colt, whoever), buy the barrel set from Doff for about $200, and your set. A complete upper will cost you about $600-$700 and require significant machining, but the real upper when in it's stripped form is only modest machining and the Systema barrel needs no machining.

If you buy a complete upper remember, you can sell the parts you don't use on canadiangunnutz.com.

Just a double confirmation on M16A3 inner barrel. It is the M4 length inner inside the 2007 model, I was a little put out but on the flip side,I do not need to buy 2 different cylinder sets now. Mind you, having picked up the CQB-R barrel set, it IS shorter the inner barrel. Now I have a M16 barrel too long for the M4 and a CQB-R barrel too short for the M4 inner, sigh...
