gear ratios
HEy everyone. i checked out the fourm and I could not find an answer to my questions.
What is the differences in the gear ratios? 100:300, 100:200, 32:1, 18:1, 16:1, 13:1. AND How do you know which one to choose? |

The higher the torque, the less the motor works to cycle the gears, traditionally you used high torque gears to pull super stiff springs. They are stupid slow, more revolutions of the motor is required to complete 1 cycle. 18:1 gears is around the stock gear ratio of an AEG... 18 turns of the motor to complete 1 cycle. which means 13:1 is one of the fastest ratios you can get. They require more toque/work from the motor to overcome the resistance, but only require 13 turns to complete a cycle. In the olden days of traditional ferrous magnet motors, you pull super strong springs efficiently you needed a high ratio gearset to make it easier on your motor. With all the new motors on the market being driven by super strong neodymium magnets, even a "speed" motor powered by these magnets will efficiently and effectively pull 13:1 gears. You really only need to look at 18:1 down to 13:1 gears these days. There's no reason to get high torque gears, on top of that some of them need special pistons because the ratio makes the spur side of the sector gear really tall so it will hit the piston rack. faster gears also provide the benefit of improving your trigger response because they require less motor rpm to cycle the gearbox. The drawback of this is that it will increase your rate of fire significantly so you run out of ammo faster.... unless you install a computerized mosfet capable of changing your rate of fire. lower ratio gears require a bit more power to pull. If you are running a ferrous magnet motor, 13:1s might be too hard for your motor to pull without being a really bad drain on your battery. IF you just want a stock replacement stick to 18:1 or 16:1s

The stock gear ratios in AEG's are 18:1.
16:1 gears are a bit faster then stock gears, but require a bit extra tuning to be able to run the speed (swiss cheese piston, file down piston guide rails etc). 13:1 gears are much faster then stock gears. Typically these go up in the 35+ rps. 100:300, 100:200, 32:1 are considered Torque up gears, and were considered useful when they could pull heavy springs (such as M120+). But that changed now, if you can get a quality gear set (i.e Siegetek gears), they can pull any spring. So torque gears are obsolete now. If you want to upgrade a gearset, ask yourself this: What rps do you want? What battery are you going to be using? What other upgrades have you done/will be doing? What is your budget? Edit: damn got beat haha

im useing a 9.4 nicd, 7.4 lipo, and a 11.1 lipo. and looking for something FAST! :P |

what motor? that is also quite important.
also what exact lipo brand? what C? what mah? voltage is just part of the equation.

with a slow motor like that you'll be fighting to get good efficiency from your batteries.. you may even kill the 1000mah lipo you have. The voltage spike when you pull the trigger on a high powered setup like that can exceed 100 amps on a good motor.
16:1 would probably be safe for your setup, I wouldn't try 13:1s unless you have a better motor. I'd also look at getting better lipos like turnigy nanotechs from hobbyking... the internal resistance of individual cells is matched across packs so no one cell drains faster than another, plus they have better burst characteristics than the horribly marked up 'airsoft' packs using noname cells. with a good 11.1v 20c 2500mah and 16:1s you'll be over 20rps for sure but no higher than 30. The weakness of your setup is the motor, and lack of mosfet. Which if you are using 11.1s you should have.

What is "fast"?
Because 1200rpm is fast, 1500rpm is really fast, anything above that is really just silly.... |

You should read this:
http://www.airsoftmechanics.com/home...iew/17/26/1/0/ It talks about the relationship between gear ratios and motor. In my opinion, if you're keeping the stock motor, there's not much benefit to only changing the gears. I see them as a pair. |

I agree that >30 is pretty excessive, and for the most part both my builds usually never run at this speed unless I want to scare some noobs. I generally run them around 20-25.
But everyone seems to duck back into cover when they hear the buzzsaw shooting in their general direction.

The same could be said for any gun...
I've kept people suppressed with my 249 at 800 and 1500rpm, my M4 shooting semi slowly, I've even kept people fully cowering behind cover in fear with a bolt action sniper rifle lol You could keep noobs suppressed with a blowgun if you really had to...
