Would this be an upgrade to my current motor?

My CA M15A4 Sportline Rifle currently has this Classic Army "High Torque" motor in it, which looks exactly like the one in this picture:


I'm just wondering, would a basic Lonex A5 motor:


Be an upgrade from the included CA High Torque motor I have?

I'm trying to look for a good motor that will be able to run off my current 8.4V Ni-MH large batteries without any issues.

I have one of those CA motors and it works really well with all of my batteries (7.4v LiPo, 8.4v & 9.6v NiMH). Have you been experiencing problems with the motor?

Aside from that, AFAIK Lonex makes quality parts so I would guess that would be an upgrade.

This one is probably best considered a matter of opinion.

In my opinion, CA motors kick the bucket way too early and easily, so the Lonex would be better.

No I haven't been experiencing problems with my CA motor; it works very well at this time, but since everything I hear about Sportline internals is pretty negative (like they're "crap") I just want to know if the CA motor is a good one or not. If it isn't, then I'd rather spend some money on a good one now, since it would suck to have my motor die during a game.

Since both are ferrite (afaik) magnet you're better upgrading something else. If the motor is running fine, keep it like that.

Now of course if you want improved performance a neo magnet motor will be superior to what you have.

I know about the more-expensive Lonex A1 and A2 neodymium-magnet motors, but based on their description of them, I'd need Li-Po batteries and overall they seem to be too powerful for a stock mechbox setup.

I also want to ask, is it normal for an AEG motor to get uncomfortably hot after prolonged firing?

If I run down multiple mags (firing a couple hundred BBs for me) with my M15A4 in a short period of time (on semi-auto), my pistol grip gets so hot that it becomes uncomfortable to keep holding it. I shot the remaining ~2000 rounds of my bag of BBs yesterday, and I had to stop for 15 minutes after almost about 1000 rounds (went straight through seven 85-round mid-caps and two 190-round high-caps) because the grip was hot.

Motor can become warm, but should not be that uncomfortable. A lot of thing can cause excessive heat :

Bad motor height,
Too much electrical resistance,
Resistance in the gearbox (bad shimming,etc)

You'd need to ask or wait for someone more qualified to answer, but that's what I know.

semi auto generates more heat than full auto. Initial torque to get the gears and piston moving from dead stop requires more voltage surge. So yes, if you were firing 1000 rounds very quickly in semi, the motor can become hot.

Uncomfortably hot is a matter of opinion though, some people can't hold a fresh cup of coffee, while others can. If your motor is generating so much heat, then it's possible a few things could be off, like shimming being too tight or motor height being off. If your gun sounds like a shrieking banshee, then motor height is probably not set properly.

It's also unlikely the gun is shimmed too tightly from factory, guns are more than likely shimmed not enough, but as with all things airsoft, consistency is not guaranteed.

I have run a lonex A1 on a 1800mah 7.4 lipo, and that is more equivalent to a 9.6v 2000~mah nimh. I'm not sure of many people running A1s with nimh batteries, but I imagine it can be done. there's only one way to find out.

As for the lonex ferrous motors, I've read they perform well enough. Much better than your CA motor? don't know, but there are a number of things to do on the gun before addressing motor.

Sportlines aren't crappy because of their motors, they're crappy because of the rest of the gearbox internals.

Doing mosfet testing on my 2 30+rps guns, if I sit there and pull the trigger 100 times in say 2 minutes, or as fast as I can, the A1s get hot enough that I wouldn't want to hold them tightly in my hand for long. But in a game situation, you'd never shoot 100 rounds that fast, let alone 1000 rounds.

Wow you are shootin alot of bb's. Are you trying to do a long term reliability test in a short ammount of time? I hardly shoot 1000bb's in one day of playing if you keep it up you may wind up killing the poor gun befor the season even gets underway lol
I know my jg m4 back in the day would get prety warm after firin off a cpl hundred rounds quickly so id imagine after 1000 it would be damn hot lol thats on a stock shim job and 400fps spring

I use the same motor and internals except for the gears. Use the money for a motor to buy a set of SHS/Core or Lonex gears, the stock sportline gears are really soft and strip easily so upgrading the motor could strip it (this is just opinion)

My gears stripped when i used a 11.1v for around 100 or so shots.

I don't usually shoot off that many BBs in one sitting (actually I fired ~2000 total that day); I simply wanted to get rid of the remaining BBs in the bag of Classic Army 0.25g BBs I bought a while ago (along with having a bit more fun than usual), as those BBs have this fine white powder to them that I feel wouldn't be good to run in the tightbore barrel I have on the way.

I wonder if I've added a good amount of wear and tear onto the Sportline internals by doing that.

I've decided to keep my existing CA motor and save up my money for a high-quality Lonex V2 mechbox, which is what I plan to buy when my Sportline mechbox internals wear out.
