Looking for recommendations for first full face mask
Hello all,
I'd like to preface this by saying that yes, I am under 18, and yes, I do own an airsoft gun. I bought myself (well, I did not buy it but it was my money) a G&G M4 Commando a while back as well as a KJW P226. Due to my age, unfortunately, I have not been able to game either of these guns and they have been basically relegated to a small, makeshift basement range and sitting hidden in my closet. Yes, I know, it was dumb of me to buy these guns before I could use them and it was dumb of me to not buy something better later on. Live and learn. Anyways, with that out of the way, I will proceed with my question: I recently turned 16 and now found that (with parental consent and presence at the event) I am able to attend some Airsoft games held my Taktik in Montreal. Before I do this however, it's vitally important that I get the proper gear together. Finding a low cost chest rig or belt and some combat pants will not be hard, but it's the mask that I'm more focused on. Obviously I already screwed up in the gun buying department, and I'd prefer to not do the same with the things that will be protecting my face, eyes and mouth, and definitely don't want to cheap out. I do want a full face mask, seeing as as a noob I don't think I've really had enough experience or gained the right to just wear goggles, but Taktik DOES allow the use of only goggles either way. Does anyone have recommendations for a good brand or model of full face mask or goggles that I could buy? I'm looking at the $70-100 range on this. Keep in mind that I do have glasses so fitting these under the mask or goggles would be preferable, but not necessary as I'm not totally blind without them. I'd also like to be able to aim properly in the mask without the need for a riser (if at all possible). Thanks very much! -JDens PS: Sub question: for a starting vest or rig, I'm thinking of going with a Rhodesian (I think that's what it's called?). Is this a good rig or would any of you recommend something else? Last edited by Jdens; October 15th, 2012 at 20:22.. |

Have you thought about goggles + half-face metal mesh mask?

That could work, I'll look into that! I'll message Taktik to see if that's cool with them first obviously, but I wouldn't mind doing that. Any goggles that I could fit my glasses under?
EDIT: Just checked, it looks like I can use full seal goggles and not just a full face mask. So yes the mesh half mask is a viable option for me Last edited by Jdens; October 15th, 2012 at 20:21.. |

The JT spectra flex 8 (with thermal lens) is a good option for you. There is a lot of room inside for glasses to fit as well as for ventilation to prevent fogging. The flexible face guard will aid in your cheek weld. The downside is that they protrude out from the face which makes it hard to see straight down. These are a modular system so you can replace parts or just simply strip it down and wear only the goggles if needed.
Another option, my preferred system is to pair goggles with a mesh mask. I've had success with Revision desert locust goggles and a small type mesh mask. The mesh breathes much better than a paintball mask which will reduce fogging of your glasses and goggles. The desert locust goggles are a tight fit to the face allowing for better vision. This option is I believe more expensive but should still fit your budget. Last edited by Kozzie; October 15th, 2012 at 20:41.. |

@Kozzie
Thanks a lot, that was very helpful! I like the JT Spectra idea and they're also a great price, so that's a definite option. The Desert Locust goggles are about double the price but I've only heard good things regarding them and from the looks of it could fit with my glasses. Mesh half masks are decently cheap too so that and the DLs would be my go to depending on the money I can round up. Otherwise I suppose I'd buy the JT mask |

The DL's have a neat prescription insert option If you don't already know but that will certainly put them out of your budget. Something for future consideration perhaps.
The RRV (Rhodesian recon vest) is a good option IMO. Lightweight, flexible and expandable with back panels and packs this is a popular choice among many airsofters. Beware of some of the china made vests quality is lacking. Condor makes a good product for not a lot of money, not military quality but it meets the quality requirements of most airsofters. |

As far as the RRV goes, yeah I was looking at the Condor ones as I know they're a pretty well trusted brand and have a good reputation. I'm going to visit some Army Surplus stores in Montreal this week to check out some pants and other clothing bits, and if I can find an RRV there (I'll look for Condor as I know one of the stores sells genuine Condor stuff) I'll consider that. Otherwise I'll just order it when the time comes. What are the chances of finding a surplus RRV? Or would these be out of my budget range entirely? |

the best facemak is the mesh mask ( + goggles) and that's why it's everywhere now.It's just perfect.

@ Mr. inked:
The thing about that is doing such will run wayyy over my budget but it's definitely something to look into in the future I think I'm going to go with the JT, and if I ever want to ditch the lower part of the mask for a mesh lower, I could. For now though I think I'll go with that mask as it's a pretty complete package. Thanks for all the help, guys! Looking forward to getting some games in after the New Year once my kit is set up fully |
