Where's this part located?

I have an ICS M4 and someone from another forum said that I needed to shim the anti-reversal latch, but never replied as to where it is, how to go about shimming it, or what exactly shimming it will do. Will someone please help me out?

Thanks,
~Slacker

Are american airsoft forums really that useless that ya gotta try a canadian one?

Edit: Was typing too fast, forgot to type the /sarcasm +4 on the end of my post.

Why be so unfriendly BC_K?

I've never heard of a requirement to shim an anti reversal latch. Look to see if the latch engages the latch points on your bevel gear. If it's really high or low, you'll see that only part of the latch's width engages the bevel gear. Alignment isn't a huge deal. As long as most of the latch is engaged, you'd be find.

Shimming could be used to move the latch up and down relative to the bevel gear. I don't think there's all that much space for shims in a AR latch though as the shoulder on the pivot pin more or less eats up all the available space for shims.

Who the hell had the bright idea to tell you the anti-reversal latch needed shimming?

In a way, it's good you came here, because it that's the kind of advice you get on that 'other' forum... I'd avoid the place too.

lol, well thanks a lot for helping me out. And yea, I came here cuz it's a lot more active than forums here, for instance, I've already gotten 3 replies here and on the "other" forum it would have taken about 3 days to get that many replies.

Also, I think he may have said to do that because it seems to be a common problem with the ICS M4's, and perhaps other ICS guns, to often shoot 2 bb's at once on semi. Some say it's just the inner barrel needing to be upgraded, what do you guys think?

Err... Do I fail to see the logic in that?

That's like saying a smaller gas tank will fix any fuel system issues.

Check your bevel gear timing. If it's not aligned properly you may get more backwind which could feed extra bbs.

The AR latch should catch the bevel gear with the peg in the sector gear at 1 o'clock

How can I check that tho? Do I need to take the motor out first so that the gears are possible to turn? Sorry, this is only my 2nd gun, and I never upgraded my first gun or messed with the internals, thereofre I don't know about this stuff yet.

well, if the gun has never been taken apart (i.e. you bought it and haven't worked on it) then the timing is probably not off.

If you're not mechanically inclined, you should get some help and find someone to show you how to take your AEG apart. It's pretty easy to end up with a bag of parts or a whiny grindy kludged back together AEG if you don't know what you're doing.

Having worked for a few hours on an ICS M4 last night, I can definitely tell you that shimming the anti-reversal latch is a good idea.

Well I've opened up the top reciever cuz I had to check the hop-up spring to make sure it was ok, but that's all I took out of the gun. The only thing I did with my last gun, a TM FA-MAS 5.56F1, was put some spacers behind the spring to stiffen it a little.

I haven't worked a lot on airsoft guns, but I am pretty mechanically inclined with this stuff, but I'd rather know what to do then to just play around with it until I get it right. Any tips for gear timing would be great.

And harleyb, did you shim your anti-reversal latch? If so, how did you shim it?

Thanks everyone,
~Slacker

Yes, the latch was shimmed. Shimming is the process of adding very thin washers, or shims, to the sides of gears and, in this case, the antireversal latch. The purpose is to prevent sideways movement, which can cause damage to gears among other problems. In the case of the ICS M4, the antireversal latch has a lot of sideways movement, and so it's a good practise to shim it.

You should probably read up a bit on mechbox maintenance. There are a number of takeapart walkthroughs, and there's a really good guide to shimming, somewhere...
