AK47 to AK74u conversion?
Hello all!
I'm worried that the AK47 might be a bit too unwieldy for me and have always been attracted to the AK74u anyway. However, I have an opportunity to pick up a G&G blowback RK47 for a decent price. I was curious as to whether anyone would know a way to convert this rifle into an AK74u? From what I can see, there are many differences that would make this a difficult feat. The easiest of these feats is the folding stock. The one that I'm worried about most is that it looks as though I would need a completely new front assembly. The hand guards look to be very different sizes. If anyone would care to share their experience or insight I would be very thankful.

if your buying it just to convert dont, you'll spend 2-3x what it costs to just buy a 74U instead.
That and AK47s aren't really that big anyways, if you need to get a folding stock for it. |

I knew I'd get that response and it is pretty much my other choice; I was just seeing if anyone had anything to say about this sort of modification.
The only qualm I have about buying a 74u straight up is the blowback feature. As far as I am aware, no company aside from SRC offers a blowback AK74u. And even that rifle is not electric blowback. What I'm trying to gather is information that will give me a clue as to what I'm getting into (or if it's even possible) if I attempt to modify an EBB AK47 into a EBB AK74u.

electric blowback is nothing special at all. Usually breaks too.
Now modification related, you'd have a hell of a time getting a AKS74U receiver ( for the stock) that would fit the blowback mechanism and a battery. EDIT: I'm also fairly certain that G&G AK externals are proprietary, requiring everything to be replaced/heavily modded to fit. |

Good point, I believe I would have to rewire that body to take a stick battery into the upper receiver; that's not considering the fact that the blowback action may make a stick battery impossible.
As for the stock, would something like this fit the bill (in terms of keeping the stock AK47 body)? http://www.evike.com/product_info.ph...ducts_id=31256 The problem I see with this is the fact that it says "for AEG's that accommodate folding stocks already" and I don't believe the AK47 body will have catching mechanism to hold the stock in place. After considering all of this, it is looking to be too much of a project to justify the EBB. I would probably have to track down or buy a completely separate AK74u just for the front assembly and body (if I wanted to close the stock). Not only that, but there are too many considerations in the actual internals of the blow back system. If I had the parts lying around it would be another story, but I don't. Unless someone else has some experience in this I think I'm just going to stick with something stock.

If you're looking for a folding type ak like the 74u, you will have to buy a 74u as the bodies are different. The hinge is actually attached to the body.

You could always build a AK pistol or AK carbine.

@Dutch
Yeah, I found that the only way it could work (with an AK47 body) is if I never closed the stock. Which is not a huge issue as I was planning on throwing a scope mount on the side which would render the folding stock useless anyway. But it would be nice to have full functionality of the rifle. Also, the G&G RK47 has a rear wired battery. Taking a gamble on the layout of the EBB system in relation to the area where a stick battery would go is not something I want to do. @Kingsix That's an interesting AK, but I personally don't like the look too much. The fore grip on the 74U is shorter and more proportionate to the barrel length. Also, I'm not a huge fan of under folding stocks. But hey, it's all personal preference. I also found out I was wrong, TM offers an EBB AKS74U which looks quite solid. For any who are curious as to how they achieved the EBB without a stick battery or full stock, they designed it to take a mini-type battery in the fore grip.
