Mechbox from Scratch.
I am entertaning the idea of building a gun from scratch including the gearbox. I pretty much figured out everything else besides the gearbox. I know drop-in gearboxes are pretty decently price but i'd like to build my own...
Here's what i've got and any advices would be good. Specially if i'm missing any pieces. : - Modify V2 8mm Reinforced Gearbox TORUS - Modify Cylinder Set - M4A1/M4RIS/S-System/SR-16 - Modify SMOOTH Modular Gearset 8mm V2/V3 - High Speed - Modify Rotary Spring Guide V2 Gearbox - Modify Air Seal Nozzle - M4/M16A2 - Modify Gearbox Spring Set V2/V3 - G&P M4/M16 Buttstock Switch Assembly I know it's mostly Modify stuff but i like the brand. Like I said if i am missing something please let me know! |

Trigger assembly, anti-reversal latch, wiring, shims, various screws, selector plate, various springs, tappet plate, hop up unit that meshes with the nozzle you chose properly............ a lot more involved in building a mechbox from scratch than the obvious, but at least you are sticking with one brand overall, that'll save you quite a few headaches as far as fitment and reliability goes.

Where would i find a Trigger assembly? Pretty much everthing else Airsoftparts has, but they dont seem to have any triggers.
Read a bit about gearboxes and it seems that mix&match is a really bad idea. Modify isnt the best brand but it's decent and available. |

Drop ins are better. But DIY is nice to do.
I'd also like to buy a v2 trigger assembly

How about you go ASCU MOSFET for the trigger unit, only thing you'd need is the trigger itself and the trigger spring !

expect to pay double what you would from buying a drop in mechbox. All the small parts you'll be buying that you could leave stock, like the cutoff lever, trigger switch and selector switch, are all upgraded parts, so they're gonna cost way more.
Also, personal preference, but I wouldn't use anything modify. Prometheus, G&P and ARS only. |

Kable,
In my shop we assemble from scratch on the average of 5 to 6 type 2 mechboxes a week. 80 percent are total Modify. Don't listen to anyone who claims they are less then first class! When it come to hopup assembles we use 70 percent Madbull (but they are a real bitch to get set up correctly. However once set up they are the bomb) The new modify Hopup is very good and we are starting to use more of them. The one place you can't use the Modfiy is for and KA lock back bolt assemble becasue they will bind up when trying to pass by the extra thickness in the upper reciever where the lock back assemble is. Becasue of what modify did to make it stay locked when dialed in the added extra thinckness across the width of the hopup no amout of modification can solve that problem. For triggers we use mostly mad bull. They line up and work great in a Modify housing. Depending on what reciever set you intend to use before you start assembleing your mech box check its fit in the reciever. Modify's are very robust and thick and in some case will bind when trying to assemble them. This may require a little custom grinding. If your not up to that then I recomend G&P gear boxes but they need different screws to hold the trigger switch which you can find packed with most motors. Cheers

I used to have great success with Modify parts, not sure if they've improved or declined since I quit doing gun work three years ago.

there is a lot of work that goes into getting a V2 switch assembly into that POS Ares gearbox. if you don't have a mill, you are SOL.

Gah I didnt realize it was that much work. I have a guy with a mill but don't think he knows enough.
I really wanted to add a mosfet to my ACR. Once it starts working again that is. lol Let us know how the custom build goes. I looked into it with my last rifle and gave up as it was to much. The acr's gearbox is going to be slowly gutted.

The only thing that's needed for a mosfet are a trigger switch (you could theoretically get away with touching 2 bare wares for this part) motor leads and a battery. |

Yes Riley. I'm an avionics tech I know how a mosfet works.
The trigger in the pts acr does not allow for a tight enough fit. It relies on the arc to make a completed circuit. Many users have had issues getting mosfets to work. and when they do. usually only bare models. Ones with active breaking really don't work. There for a different type of trigger is required. Some people have modded a V2 to fit within the mechbox to fix this issue.

the trigger mech on these Ares gearboxes work in a way that using something like a tact switch just would not work. the micro switch used by Ares is set up to be pressed for off and released for on, basically working backwards. as for guns that i have worked on that have either V2 or V3 switches (shuttle pushed forward into contacts) and run with a MOSFET, i replace the contacts with tact switches.
