I also have a monocular. It's Gen1 and it's basically not suitable for other thing than perimeter surveillance.

The FOV is not whide anough to use it to walk and the resulition is not very good.

But if you are watching a base or survailling a trail with a minomum of starlight or better, a moon, you will see everything. The built in IR illumination work only for close range and I would not use it because at a certain angle, you ca see a little red light.

One day, I will invest in one of those bigass NVG that cost 3000-4000$+

Like I said on another forum, if it's the difference between seeing fuzzily in the dark with a narrow field of view, versus not seeing at all, the choice is obvious. Gen1 really isn't that horrible. Certainly if you can buy a Gen2 then go for it, but if you're budget-oriented or don't plan on using it much, Gen1 works just fine.

I had two pairs of nightvision... Then sold them because Gen+1 licks the big one.

Got a Gen1 scope. Good enough to shoot with.

IMHO gen1 isn't worth the money. It just turns the darkness into fuzzy greeness... unless IR illumination is on, in which case you might as well put an IR stobe light on your head and mark yourself as a target for enemies who have NVG.

I use to have something like this:
http://www.atncorp.com/NightVision/N...lars/NightStar
I have to admit it was fun but I found that you had to use the IR illuminator to get a clear image, which isn't that great since anybody else with an NV system could see the beam and pinpoint you.

I agree with Fox,you have to realize its limitations(like fuzziness)but its great for finding people in the shadows that otherwise you would not see without it.It CANNOT compare with gen 2 and higher but you get what you pay for.

Why use something so expensive? What if you somebody accidentally fires at you (as it is dark) and shatters your NVG lense and messes up the internals?

You get/make one of those lense protectors that people put on other expensive optics... Basically just attach a piece of plexi over the lense
