Headset Modification, External PTT Button

External PTT Switch for Motorola Talkabout Headset

Ok guys, this has been a project in the works for about a month now, the biggest part was getting a tiny, but strong and hollow, box to house the push button and wiring in, and that will velcro to the shoulder area on my vest. But! I found an old metal resistor box while sifting through my garage, hollowed it out and perfect!

Then I just used a simple $2.50 push button from The Source, and with this helpful guide http://www.nadtec.to/doc/wiring/Moto...t%20Wiring.doc it was overall a very simple project to finish.

All you need to do is carefully split the wires, find the right wire (for me it was white), split it, and solder each end to the prongs of the push button. Then heat shrink tubing to insulate and protect all of the wires, and voila! an external push button that activates the PTT on my T5420 without having to reach in that case to push the one on the radio.

I did some after pictures, not the best but I hope you can see how useful this project is, and how simple it really is for you to do yourself!

Or, you know, you could just have bought a headset with PTT in the first place.......

Edit, another pic of it installed with velcro on my vest, bad pic, but will take some more with a better camera later, after I try it at the next game

The do it yourself satisfaction thing is lost on much of the folks here. I applaud the ingenuity.

Well there must be something wrong with your radio?

The one I have in the picture is just a 30 dollar boom mic from The Sourse(Radio Shack) BUT I have upgraded recently to a throat mic system I got from Army Issue, single pin, designed for Motorola radios. I wired the PTT button to my one featured, and gotta say it works fantastic.. Ill post some pics up later, update this thread a bit.

I have to say I really like this setup, simple & functional. Very low drag, high speed, good work!

For 100 bucks, there better not be something wrong with them!
