AK Grips in Pine

Anyone have any links to websites that may have different shades of wood grips? I'm looking for more of a brighter, yellow sort of grip set, pine if you will. Also preferably Romanian style with the vertical grip, still don't get it? Let me give you an example.

Movie - 44 minutes (north hollywood shootout)
YouTube - 44 Minutes

At 29 seconds, you see Larry Phillips spin around showing the grip on the front of the AK. I'm basically trying to put together an AK based off that film, wire stock, bright wood Romanian grips.

Thanks.

PM ancorp... He's pretty much the resident AK-tard... He has some pretty light wooden color grips.

That video is overbrightened, the grips aren't that light, but ain't very dark either:

YouTube - 44 Minutes (ALIEN)

Most woods are fairly light colored when unstained. The wood you saw on my short AK is plywood, and it looks to be lightly stained, or possibly just clearcoated without staining. It came to me this way I have not done any work on it. The darker wood on my AKM was first sanded, and it was really, really blond, almost white.

My suggestion - get real Romanian foregrips and modify them to fit. They're dirt cheap in the states (order online or visit a gun show), they are plywood, and you can sand em down and stain them lighter. Doesn't get any more realistic then that. Can't really get a realistic pattern on the wood without using actual plywood.

Yeah, those aren't pine. Plus you need a hardwood for that kind of application. Just out of the woods I have used before (I used to do a lot of cabinetry) I would say to go with a birch and shellac it.

Pine would work just fine. Many RS AKs use pine handgrips. Plus carving a set of AK grips from a hardwood would be prohibitively difficult for someone who is not a woodworker. Hell, I'm one and I'd rather not hand carve a hardwood either.

Well the gun he's trying to replicate - the Romanian AIMS, uses plywood. As so Russian AK's, and Polish ones. And possibly many others, haven't looked into it.

Hmm, I think I'll go with purchasing some real Romanian grips, sanding them down and re-staining if they're not the colour I want.

I've found these so far:

Top

Lower
http://www.aa-ok.com/store/catalog/p...roducts_id=762

Can I find the lower part cheaper anywhere?

They've also got
http://www.aa-ok.com/store/catalog/p...roducts_id=617

Which is a whole set, but would I be able to mod the stock for use aswell? Looks like there's an area for the battery.

You'd have to hollow the stock out by hand. I found a Rommy lower handguard at www.gunthings.com for cheap.

Yeah, I see it, also has the upper for eight bucks, sounds good. I guess I'll just buy one of the stocks from Cushak.

Now I'll need to get a lower metal receiver and upper area, slanted flash hider, and a pistol grip, then the Romanian AK is done.

You're gonna need a lot more then that to complete it, but to get the basic look, yes.

The lower receiver has to be stamped style (AKM), the front and rear sight, as well as the gas pipe and gas port also have to be AKM style.

Get the same Element receiver that Ancorp got, they appear beautiful. Then send me pictures, the AIM is my dream rifle.
