semi only M16?

Hey everybody, I'm in need of a little hint here.

I've got an ICS M16A3 and a TM G36C and I wish to turn my m16 into a sniper platform in the 400-450 fps range. However, to be allowed to shoot in those ranges the gun needs to be either a bolt action or semi only. Is there any way I could make my m16 semi only, preferably without breaking anything so I can take it back to semi/full and change the spring back if I want it back as an assault rifle ? If so, is it possible to do by someone who doesn't have much experience with opening AEGs (I only changed the spring on my m16 right now, and it's a split gearbox type so it wasn't too complicated) or should I consult a gun doc?

Thanks in advance!

Selector plate needs modification or you could put a tiny screw or pin in the body to stop the selector from turning all the way to auto.

You got to remember though sometimes AEG's do jam up on semi and usually you have to switch to full auto and shoot once or twice and switch back to semi.

some guns do this more often then others. If yours doesn't have any issues like that maybe its nothing to worry about.

Hum you're right I didn't think about that... maybe a removable screw in the body or something, but then I guess it wouldn't count as semi only... I'll speak to the organisers of the games I attend to and I'll see what I can do. If it turns out too complicated I'll upgrade it to 390 fps and shoot semi anyway...

However!! He has an ICS with the decocking lever so he should be able to reset the mechbox with out going in full auto.

I could do it with the famas. Jam it in semi and instead of switching to full auto I just hit the decocking lever and it was good to go.

It once jammed on me and the forward assist would not do it, I had to fire full auto, but yeah, most of the time it works... it's why I thought about a removable screw, not something that is too easy to remove so it counts as semi only but removable if I need to.

you may want to re-think that 450 fps idea. it sounds good in theory however ics uses their 2-part mechbox. the upper (where all the strain of a heavier spring is going to be) is not really "overbuilt" to withstand that kind of stress. you could probably get away with 370-380 as the upper limit before upper gearbox damage will occur. i've never seen anyone do that level of upgrading to the ics guns, however i've taken enough of them apart to be concerned about it. you other option is to put in a reinforced solid gearbox and upgrade how you like.

Yeah I was thinking about changing everything because the stuff I have in that gearbox won't survive 450 fps

You have to modify the tappet plate and change the cutoff lever spring to make the gen 2 mechbox semi only... The tappet plate is permenently modified and can not be converted back so you would need a new one to convert back.

you can just trim some of the selector plate away on the forward side (towards the front of the mechbox) where the spring is for the trigger release bar. i think that is what vondnik was trying to say. modifying the tappet will just give you a useless tappet and you'll have to buy another one. so don't modify the tappet.
