It might look like a pretty big gap between there but it's about half the size of a bb so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

I feel that the strength of those little strips is compromised, and if a bb was to hit it it would be able to punch through or break it.
You hsould probably just put in a mesh cutout, or just drill holes in a mesh pattern.
