Winter set up guns and gear

As we head into winter, I wanted to start a fresh post on suggestions for winter Airsoft set up.

With a lot of new gear out this post was to see how some of this will apply in -5,games.

This post is also to help others get set up prior to hearing into a game.

Any input be it hop up batteries etc will be huge.

I typically run only my bolt action outdoors over the winter. Works just as well in the winter as in the summer

Buying those hand warmer packs and sticking them in your battery compartment makes a huge difference. Lots of guys here put a wool sock over the battery compartment too, just use electrical tape to hold it on. Carrying your spare batteries next to your body keeps them warm, if you have a heated building to store them in that helps a lot too.

silicone hop hubbers will perform better than harder rubbers in the cold. Typically the 50 degree hardness rubbers work very well.
and use LiPo batteries. NiMH batts might drain up to 300% faster in the cold, but LiPo's I've read only increase 5-10% drain.
I've never experienced any noticeable LiPo drain increase in the cold. Don't have to worry about keeping them warm either.

Issues arise with different mechbox greases as well, if they get too thick in the cold they could seriously affect performance.

I am wondering how the W-hold hop up will work in the cold. Anyone tried that in the cold?

I have had great success with LiPo batteries for guns. Also, the key to keeping warm in winter is light, thin layers, and lots of them! Air is one of the best insulators, and having the gaps between layers of cloth will keep the heat in without restricting too much motion.

The worst thing I have had difficulties with is fingers getting numb. I have a pair of gloves from Mark's Work Warehouse, and they're alright, but not so grand.

I would love to have a skin-tight pair of gloves to go underneath my winter-operator gloves.

I bought Dakine gloves for snowmobiling and they came with a set of skin tight gloves to be worn underneath. They make a world of difference for me.

I've wrapped my battery up in tinfoil with one if those palm warmers in the past. It worked very well to keep my battery alive, I kept a spare in a small lunch bag, with a bigger warmer, to keep it warm in case I needed it...

My crossman shotty was there as a back up!

Dress in layers.

Eat before a game to ensure you have calories to burn to keep you warm!

Charge all your batteries and have several spares!

These are all great things for sure.


Thanks everyone for taking a few minutes to post stuff.

One I learned from Tanner is to get a radio pack and zip tie it to the stock. Then putyour batteries in the larger pack and put a hand warmer in the pack. More room and you can keep your spare battery in that.

We used the lipo but she hit -15 and when the wind-chill kicked in, the old G&P had a tough time cranking over.

Im sure everyone knows this but for sidearms having a co2 powered option will enable you to use your sidearm in the cold, whether its just a co2 mag or a NBB co2 powered option. Propane/Green Gas and duster are absolutely useless beyond -3 but ive had co2 weapons perform fine at -15.
