spring downgrade in AEG, worth it?
Hey all,
I was looking to downgrade my spring in my G&G SCAR-L, for indoor games. If I'm planning on buying a second gun for indoor games in the spring(need to save a little) is it even worth having the spring swapped out? Not entirely sure the risks, if any in this. The only quote I have gotten for pricing is $70+ for both the cost of the spring and labor. just wanted to see what others thoughts were on downgrading are? Thanks!

My advice would be find a friend who knows gearboxes and have them swap it for you, or find another gun doc. $70 is expensive as fuck and spring changes are basic and only take 10 minutes, less if you are proficient.
If you are buying an indoor gun in a few months I would wait if your only option is $70 to change the spring. Otherwise, spring changes are quick and easy if you or a friend knows what they are doing. Your choice really. Just depends how much money you want to spend. Edit: I should note that the 10 minutes or less is from the point you have the gearbox out of the gun. SCARs are more complicated than ARs to strip down. Either way, not difficult, just tedious.

Unscrew.
Open, while preventing the spring from flying. Remove said spring. You may need to unscrew the piston head. Put it away. Take new spring. Replace new spring. Screw as needed. If V3, swear at the trigger spring. Hold tight while screwing gearbox. Test. Replace in receiver. 10 minutes sounds about right. Of course, a professional gun doc will perform basic maintenance, like a quick re-greasing, checking AOE, offer to check the shimming (that step is long, that's why I say optional). |

$70 is a rip off for a spring swap. I would do that for $40. Also the spring wont be attached to the piston. Not many guns are like that anymore.

If I were to take it to a doc what spring would I need for 350fps? Springs and gear boxes are beyond me at this point lol

A M100 or M90 strength spring will be just fine.
There is a lovely resource called YouTube that carries many instructionals on how to strip a SCAR as well as how to do a complete spring change. Up to you on how savvy you think you are.

If you consider yourself handy and reasonably careful, I would encourage you to do it yourself - after read and watch some instructions and found yourself comfortable doing that, of course.
Otherwise just find a friend or a gun doc (that charge less, probably) to do that. Most experienced players, even if they don't consider themselve gun doc, will be able to do that.

As others said, 70$ is rip off.
I charge 20$ flat + the price of the spring, what ever the gun or brand. Usually go with M100 from Modify. They give constant FPS from batch to batch and hold strength for years. |

I found a guy that can do it for $20. Will any M90 spring do?

Whomever is telling you $70 is trying to take advantage of you, and is frankly a bit of a toss pot. Here in Edmonton you can get a spring swap for $30 INCLUDING spring, done by a FULL TIME gun tech who is backed up by a brick and mortar airsoft store.

As a gundoc, I charge people more for bringing me a gun in pieces, and it increases for every missing part.
