TM Type 89
Well before we say the classic "Google is your friend", let me start out by saying that I've gotten really close with him and we are the best of friends. Sadly, google doesn't know everything. He got mad at me when i told him that. Long story short, I've read all the reviews i could find on the Type 89 and it seems like a good gun--my 18 year old friend is thinking about purchasing it--all metal, reliable 3 round burst, the fact that its a TM. But what i didn't find in the reviews was long term remarks about the gearbox. I found a pic of it, and it is essentially a V.2, or at least that is what it looks like. So would it be plagued with all the problems in the cold that normal V.2 mechboxes have? Furthermore, what kind of internal parts does it take? Is it like the TM M14 in that is has a mish-mash of V.2. V.3 compatible parts with a few original parts (i would assume that the whole 3-round burst thing counts as an original part).
My question: Do any of you (or your close friend/teammate) own, or have had experience with this gun? Pics for your viewing pleasure: Well there you have, along with pics for you to examine (specifically the mechbox). I have read all the reviews at Arnie's for this gun, as well as a myriad of other sites like digital wasteland. Anyway, at least i can't get into trouble for not using google. FYI, the site pertaining to the mechbox was in Japanese. Thanks to all who post, Donster 125 Last edited by Donster; January 24th, 2008 at 11:44.. |

Hmm, google didn't show you mechbox.com? Strange.
Anyway, it may look like a V2, but it's different, and it's a V8, and only the T89 has it. |

The inside of the mechbox looks like normal V2/V3 parts, unless the size of the cylinder is slightly different (like on a V1). Spring guide looks like a V2. The switch assembly is different, though. Obviously different selector plate, no safety arm, etc.
I also noticed, in the last pic of the mechbox, the cutout for the cylinder has two holes at the front corners, where cracking usually occurs. Dunno how much it ends up actually helping for upgrades/cold weather use, though ("paging Dr. MadMax...") I'm curious about the burst mechanism, seeing how it's mechanical -- I've only ever seen the old SIG55x electronic ones which were failure-prone and upgrade unfriendly, and using MOSFETs for one of my project guns, currently. If you plan on doing serious upgrading, or playing in the deep freeze, I dunno how good an idea it is going with a gun with an unusual mechbox; in the end, your best bet for that is always going to be a quality reinforced mechbox -- which may not materialize for V8s.

I have a friend who has one, his only bitch is that the battery doesn't last long, and wished it had the room for a bigger battery. It fires sweet and it's accurate, good weight to it. He's had it over an year and it is generally his primary rifle and it hasn't broken down yet.

The Type 89 is a very accurate AEG; it is my second favorite rifle I own.
However, there is not much you can do with it once you get: put a scope base on it and some optics, PDI makes a front block so you can mount a weapon-light, etc. If your friend is new to airsoft, he may find that he has painted himself into a corner getting an 89.

ya well my friend likes the idea thats its full metal (no worries about having to upgrade it) and the fact that its a TM means you are pretty much good from the get-go. that being said, i told him if he wants to upgrade power, a new piston head and a TB inner barrel and he should be fine.

I got one few mopnths ago. Only gamed twice now seems to be accurate and fast. No battery issues yet. ANother guy in the club has been using his all winter long with no problems. No extreme cold playing though either..
Front handgaurd is not metal on the type 89. Not mine anyway. Metal handgaurd is available from Den trinity. Havnt ordered one yet as i am not sure of the shipping from den to Canada on handgaurd.

it seems to be set up the same way the old both elephant type 89 was, I'm currently trying to fix one, the gear that allows the right selector plate to move back and forth needs to be shimmed on the outside be the gear has worn over the plate and it just skips (more pressure on the gear take the play out of the question and allows for the plate to work like it's supposed to again), the trigger contact is completely fried and i'm currently looking for alternatives includes a micro switch but finding one that handles 30 amps and fits in the box as well is a challenge and a half.

The accuracy of this aeg is the same if not better than the KA FAL, anyone who has owned a KA FAL before can verify that it is one amazing AEG the only issue I have with the type 89 and my brief ownership of it is the battery space and it's dislike for LiPo batteries, the one I owned before I switch to a KA FAL dislike the KA LiPo and the regular battery performance was dissapointing at best especially if you upgrade the regular spring to a stiffer one (in mycase my 89 was shooting 360fps)
