Umarex G36 (Ares made)- are they good?
A friend is very interested in this g36. Figured its best to ask the wise folks here before he "pulls the trigger".(owch)
Its in his price range around the 300-$350 level- is this a good call? |

It's a pretty decent starter gun. Externally it's probably the best G36 made. Internally it's better than most of the Chinese guns. Only complaint I really have is the stock motor is no good for anything more than 360 fps. Like most G36s it has limited battery space ,though, so I'd recommend saving money for a good charger and 7.4 lipo batteries. Or stick with 8.4 minis.

i have two of them, my g36k is by far my favorite gun. ive had it for 2 years and the only issue i ever had was that the hop up ripped two weeks ago. which actually isnt a complaint because i knew it was time to switch it anyways.

You see quite a few of those Umarex G36s around Manitoba. It's a solid, reliable performer. I had one, and was always impressed by how realistic the take-down was.
I never experienced any failures with my G36; if I had, disassembly was always a breeze, and working on that rifle would be notably easier than most other types - pop out three pins, and the gun comes apart into a just few basic sub-assemblies. For the most part, any G36 accessory will fit any airsoft G36 - even real steel parts can often fit.

I made a thread like this when I first started on this site. Check it out on my profile. ARES is a pretty controversial topic.

Cool- good to hear you can get something decent for that price. The site we're gonna buy it on says that they dont offer a warranty specifically for these guns.
No Warranty/Returns on pre-upgraded UMAREX Products. All units Tested and Guaranteed working before shipping. Is this a deal breaker? Thanks Jerry- checking it out |

I've had my Ares G36CV for about half a year. It's already gone down twice. When it works, I love it; good accuracy, range and I like the feel. However; having already failed on me twice in one season, I'll be looking elsewhere for my next gun.

For the price it isn't too bad. I cannot deny that they are good starter guns because of the price, functionality and quick change spring system, however ARES is just what remains of the old shitty STAR company.
I've owned and gamed with three different G36's: CA, JG and ARES. In my honest opinion, The only benefit Ares had externally was the dual optic. I didn't like the external finish, plastic looked really cheap. It also came non functioning out of the box, I had to re-solder the wiring to the poorly made connectors before it would work. The quick change spring system also severely compromises the integrity of the rear of the gearbox, however this won't be a problem as long as you don't heavily upgrade the gun (noob friendly). It also seems to have a problem where the space inside the handguard isn't quite big enough for a standard battery, where the positioning of the battery causes the fairly loose free floating barrel to move around depending on the position of the battery and how you hold the handguard, resulting in loss in accuracy. I've never had this problem with any other G36. On the plus side, accuracy was decent when the barrel wasn't wobbling, it comes with the hard to get dual optic, comes with two stocks so you can rear wire it and fix the accuracy issues, and it performs decently. Also G36s can easily take a 9.6 in the handguard -though the Ares one seems to require a bit of jamming. That doesn't really matter because it comes with a stock that you can install to put the battery in there. I run two 9.6 minis on my CA G36 and I've never run out of power in a game. |

Something many regular M4/16 users learn the hard way. On the inside I got a last version one and so far the only issue I had was a stuck motor because I was pressing trigger too fast for it despite a LiPo 11.1 in the handguard. Accuracy and hop up are extremely good compared to gen 2 (when it was still sold by STAR) and 4 I had back in France.

The only weakness with the ares is the trigger from what I've read. the microswitch may break, leading to fun times trying to track a replacement down as it's a non standard part.
G36s in general are really easy to work on. I have a CA. 9.6v nunchuck nimhs fit fine, trying to find a high peformance 11.1v lipo to fit in the handguard can be a challenge. |
