AEG or GBB for claybank?

Hey my name is Rob, and I am 50 years of age (I have already met with an age verifier in Edmonton). I will be attending claybank this year with my son. The reason for my joining of this forum is, because I am looking to get some good quality airsoft rifles, and kit. But the main reason I created this post is to ask all of you; what style of airsoft rifle would you suggest a gas blowback rifle or an AEG? I am not sure of the difference, and would love an explanation.

AEG is better for outdoor games, GBBs can vary in performance dependent on the weather. last year at claybank, the morning was to cold to use GBBrs, and it got really hot in the afternoon hours.

AEG are cheaper guns to maintain as well as easier to work on.

GBBRs are very realistic and cool but need parts extra parts out of the box, as well mags cost an arm and a leg.

alright thank you, but now comes another question. I currently have a JG G36C for claybank. Would you guys suggest I get a higher quality AEG for claybank?

Hey rob, welcome to the boards! you say your looking for a good reliable gun, go AEG simply because it is the most commonly used gun in airsoft. AEG are usually full automatic guns, they can help when you need to take down many targets. Also you said you are going to claybank, some things you might want to know, during the first game there is a ammo reload rule, so bring more magazines if you can, also the game is being played over a 2 day span, so bring some extra bateries. Im not sure how much you know with AEG's, but you can learn most of what you need here:

Gas blowbacks are cool guns and all, but these are used mostly for side arms, like pisols and not as your main firearm. I highly recommend that you invest in an AEG as your primary firearm, and if you want a gas blow back, to buy one for a side arm. simply put.


Also, its not really the quality of the gun, I had no-name ones from wallmart which served me well. See you at claybank. ps what team are you on? better be bravo...

Before you even decide AEG or GBB, ask yourself what model of firearm do you wish to have as an airsoft gun, is there a certain military style you wish to simulate? Take a moment to evaluate your choices. Now that you have decided on a make and model you can progress to picking between AEG or GBBR.

Nearly every make and model comes in AEG, while GBBRs are only available in a few styles such as armalite and scar for the time being.

AEG: Simply put, today’s airsoft guns are nothing more than a motor driven gear set that cranks back a piston which is then released to push and compress air in a cylinder which is then directed out the nozzle to propel the BB down the barrel.

GBBR: The GBBR works on the premise of gas propulsion, gas is stored in the magazine of the GBBR along with the BBs of course. When trigger is pulled mechanisms engage magazine and feed the BB, at the same time gas is also drawn from the magazine channeled into propelling the BB down the barrel.

Given the expected weather for the time of May for claybank, neither AEG or GBB should suffer any detrimental performance effects from cold since it should not be very cold out. At this time many GBBs being produced require some after purchase preventative maintenance in order to get them into a state where they can be considered reliable for long term use. The same can be said about some brands of AEGs as well. There are to many variables to explain at this time but I just wish to give you a generalized idea of what you maybe looking at. For a GBBR you will definitely be sinking in a greater deal of money, especially if you factor in the cost of magazines, the same could be said for an AEG. However that is dependent on the brand of AEG you buy, also AEG magazines are not as expensive as GBBR mags. You can purchase 1 box of 5 metal 68 round M4($65) mags for the cost of 1 Prowin 50 round gas mag for a WA GBB($65).

A JG G36C is a more than sufficient gun.

I agree to what has been suggested, however, I recommend that you stay away from GBBRs for the time being. They are quite difficult to maintain, especially if you are new to airsoft. As for an AEG, you can basically pull it out of the box and it is ready to go without any further maintenance.

Last year all the GBBR users had to put away their GBBR's and pick up their PTW's because the weather didn't cooperate.

As much as it pains me to say it. Go with an AEG. They are more robust when it comes to temperature, and cost, and efficiency. Now, that being said, if you are in airsoft for realism, than I personally say go with a GBBR. Why? It functions identically to the real steel version.

I just really hate the electric whine of an AEG. Yet, I love my P90 (AEG)....

The gun you have right now should be fine for claybank. But, as said earlier, make sure you have more than 1 battery because it is a 2 day milsim.

The JG is fine. Just go and talk to Jeff from Capital Airsoft and he'll be able to set you up. As well you have a great gundoc in Edmonton Sam(uel) and he does great work from what I hear.

I would go with the AEG for now because GBBR's are such a new technology and with problems of it being too cold (can't fire efficiently) or too hot (fires "hot", or over the field limits) to play with it.
