They tell you never to look down the barrel of a real or airsoft gun. But I recall when I was looking at the PAL and RPAL practice tests, that looking down the barrel is a part of some safety/weapon securing system/practice.

I took the Safety Course this spring to finally get my licensing in order... After firearms training in the US Army many years ago, I was appalled at the expectation that I stare down the barrel...

Yes, if you confirm there is no round in the chamber first visually and usually with a finger, and have the gun on safe, then you can look down the barrel to confirm there are no obstructions.

Yeah that's what I was referring to. It was one of the last steps in the process.
Does anyone remember the name of this system? It was some acronym.

PROVE and ACTS. It's the last step of PROVE:

Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
Remove all cartridges.
Observe the chamber.
Verify the feeding path.
Examine the bore.
