The problem with an American retailer is that they must have an export permit for an item like that. If they don't and try to export it anyways and get caught, they can be fined heavily on the U.S. side, but likely nothing would happen to you here except lose your money on the item.
If you buy it already in Canada from a Canadian retailer, you'll be fine. Just like buying the guns, but this time it's the other side of the border causing all the ruckus.
