I've always wondered, if you were a legal owner of a replica before 1998, aren't other replicas you posses protected under a grandfather clause like 12(x) items?

Probably not, Replicas dont follow the same rules as firearms.
Sometimes I wish they did... Those laws are fairly clear and the paperwork is in place to ensure; proper ownership, places where they can be used, who can use them, AND legal age. |

my friend has the same gun... it always does the same thing... you should just throw it out...
Or try and replace some parts... |
