Isn't this why some close protection details train that weird "draw and shoot from the hip as fast as possible" move?
With enough training, experience, and alertness I'm sure a gun would still be useful in a knife-fight situation. That said, getting shot doesn't always stop the attacker and if they're in conversational range then you're probably gonna get cut even if you do get shots off. Not to mention the majority of Police and even military wouldn't train properly for this.

Badly it's true. it's not they are not trained for those situation...the problem is they only train at police academy after that don't train enough and not on a regular base when employed. Police rely to much on their firearm. This year in Canada they have been couple of information about a female police officer that have been disarmed
As for military personnel, i will call it CQB training for urban warfare.... The training is good , but it's training and it's not trained enough and on regular basic(i talk of regular troop here).

The biggest thing with fighting an attacker with a knife is control and distance. If you can control his arm, or wrist you can lay into his body with hits until you can take him to the ground or draw. Distance is really hard to put between yourself and a determined attacker considering you've only got three ways to move and they wouldn't be as fast as a guy lunging at you.

When I teach defense against the knife, I tell my students that you begin this fight dead.. and work back from there, Seeing as you are already dead there is no reason not to pursue an aggressive defense, and counterattack, you have nothing to loose.

To make it short, it consists on getting as close as possible to the attacker before he's been able to completly pull off his knife and push his hand holding the knife close to his body. You're not trying to push his weapon against him, just trying to avoid him from pulling it off. Use your head, other hand, knee, whatever to strike him until he's weaken to a point that you can break out and run away. I wouldn't try this without training, but it definetly needs less training than disarming the attacker Jacky Chan Style. It relies mostly on situationnal awareness training and very close (and very dirty) combat skills. Edit: Notice the "slashing" technic of the attacker in the beginning of the video. This is very unpredictable, hard to dodge and even harder to disarm way of using a knife... because the attacker is never expending his arms far from his body, he can react very fast.
