it's not necessarily the noise, though resolution is a HUGE bonus, the yukon gen1 has the same resolution as a night optics D300-MS which is low end gen2.
Although the gen2 has greater gain, allowing you to see, the gen1 has NO noise in the tube, making everything crystal clear (when you can see it, anyway)
The major advantage of the gen2-HP over the MS isn't necessarily in the better resolution, but in significantly higher signal to noise ratio. There's still noise in the tube, but it's clear enough you don't need to constantly be re-focusing to maximize your viewing potential. Guys can be slightly out of focus but I'm still able to identify them due to the clarity.
I've seen the low end gen2 units and in MY opinion, your options are either high end gen1 (yukon NVMT), or mid-high end gen2 ($1500-$2200). The low end gen2 really isn't worth it due to the noise.
