Soviet PKM Belt-Fed Rifle project
This will be a freebie to the airsoft community. I'll post the drawing here, and leave it editable.
Let's do the first "Open Source" Airsoft design. We'll start the process with drawings of the Standard Chinese/Marui AK-74. This design is open to input from other designers, I want others to add details, suggestions, etc. The base criteria is we want a reasonably realistic approximation of the huge boxmag-equipped PKM's, like we see in the pics from Iraq. Going for too much accuracy can kill this, or keep it at the starting phase forever. So let's say 8/10ths real will suffice. First off, we need pics. To get things started: I hope to God I never meet the guys in the next two photos...but I bet they know where to get good Brown-Brown. And finally, this is what we want to end up with... And before somebody points out an obscure high-dollar production model on Ebay, This is about the design/construction process itself. Last edited by Killbucket; July 20th, 2007 at 18:46.. |

Nice, got it. Very nice close-ups, as well. Thanks!
Is there a list of these somewhere? |

what type of materials are you planning for this, do you have the ability to make casting or have machineing ability, just asking, I'm more than interested in this....plus an FN MAG 58.

Check out the red-alliance.net forums. A couple of airsofters have made scratch built PKM's recently.
That measurement file came from those boards. |

I'm all for this project if Killbucket is on board! His work on the 1919 is sweet.
I found goodspeed's excellent PKM replica on Red-Alliance.net. His use of square tubing is a great idea. I'm using the same material for an MG-42 project. Also the vertical BB feed like Hero/STAR's Mk46 is swell as it allows for the use of G36 hop-up assembly. Will this project call for 100% scratch-built construction? I've seen PKM stocks and ammo cans each for $50 on gun auctions recently. Those purchases would save a lot of time and make great progress towards realism. The feed cover seems to be the biggest challenge for a build. Maybe use Killbucket's ABS pattern techniques to fab the parts? Another option could be to use a CYMA AK as a donor gun to get the pistol grip, front sight assembly, and foundation sheet metal for the top cover. (Killbucket, is that what you meant refering to the Chinese/Marui AK-74?) Any way, I look forward to this. |

What's that-anti tank rifle ? All I know about it is that it was a blast to shoot and generated mutch less recoil than I expected.

Finnish Lahti L39 20mm anti-tank rifle. You're real lucky to have shot one.
Looking at it next to the PKM, that thing is huge! Must be over 7 ft long.
