If you don't want to go into the mechbox, you can leave the spring compressed for a few days to a week. However, not only is this inaccurate but also puts a lot of stress on the internals.

A BB is measured in grams (you can easily convert to newtons based on earths atmosphere/gravitational pull).

At the instantaneous pushing of the BB, when it exits the barrel you can measure FPS or Joules. They are related and therefore and be converted from one to another.

We say FPS because it's so much easier to understand for people with "simple minds" (eg. arts/humanities majors). It would be more correct to measure with Joules however I doubt we're going to be playing outside of earth anytime soon (where newtons instead of mass is applicable). FPS vs Joules is very much like imperial vs metric measurements, they're interchangeable you just need to know the equation to convert from one to another.
ye sorry i was just thinking in terms of power weight ratio. been reading alot about cars lately...i.e.: lighter cars don't need as much HP to go faster.... it makes sense logically but for the purposes of airsoft games it obviously isn't the way to go.but like i said. to lower the FPS, you can use heavier BBs. To Lower the FPS for a CQB game, then u can change a spring. like my first reply. i just didn't read the OP carefully.

There A metal cylinder in the back of the gearbox it holds the spring in i has 3 holes in the cylinder and it's held in with a pin that has a little piece that locks it in place on the other side just change the hole and you change the fps and it only takes 2 minutes to take the gn apart and change the fps i have it at the lowest setting shooting 330 second setting i hear shoots 360-370 and the highest setting is 400 so you pretty much i pretty much will never have to change my spring for outdoor or indoor games

By the way you have the wrong formula

Work = Force * distance is for work done
Kinetic Energy = (mass * velocity^2) / 2 is the formula that your looking for

So with this formula, and after unit convertion, when people say your gun is limited to 400fps, what they really mean, is your gun is limited to a 1.47 Joule limit of energy, which when you pop it into the formula, you are allowed:

.2g 400fps
.25g 357fps
.28g 338fps
.30g 327fps
.36g 298fps
.4g 283fps
.43g 272fps
.88g 191fps
