Retailing in Ontario
Not sure if this belongs here but for some reason I'm unable to start my own thread so I had no where else to ask...
I'm working on making an airsoft retail shop in Ont, I've already been in contact with suppliers and am familiar with legal issues etc. Have registered for a BN and taxes are taken care of so far. I was wondering if there's any other licenses or something I'm missing that needs to be done before I can open my doors. I'm not very familiar with business in Canada and want to be sure I don't miss anything. Thanks for your advice. Joe |

It depends on whether or not you're going to be selling guns and restricted parts or not and, if you are, where you're getting them. If you are going to sell guns and restricted parts (metal bodies, grenades, mags with visible rounds, etc) and are obtaining them from a Canadaian source, you should have no additional permits needed, unless there is something special your province or municipality requires. If you're going to be selling guns and restricted parts and obtaining them from foreign sources, you will need a BFL with a permit to import prohibited devices. You can contact your provincal CFO to apply for those and you'll probably get them shortly after monkeys start flying out of my ass. They are pretty much impossible to obtain and even if you did manage to get them, one of your conditions would be you wouldn't be able to sell to the public as the permits are meant for the theatre and movie industries. So getting these products from a Canadian source will greatly simplify your business and keep you in the good books of the local constabulary.
Now if you're just selling gear and non-restricted parts, ammo, batteries, etc, you shouldn't have any issues.

I'll be getting guns without metal bodies and opac colored (see thru) bodies from Canada, only gear like vests helmets gloves etc and mags w/o ammo showing will be imported. So from what you're saying I won't need any other licenses if I keep to these plans?

If that's the case, I don't see any issues. I've imported a crapload of gear, parts, mags, etc. for myself and our club and other than one gearbox shell, I never had an issue. The shell was seizes as a "replica firearm receiver" but I got it released about 2 months later. So unless you province and/or municipality needs something for this type of product (which I highly doubt), you should be good. Keep in mind that certain items from the USA may require an export permit but if you're importing from HK or China, you're ok.

"Serpentor", Props Canada

Technically he is a retailer if he opens his doors. I've known a couple people who bought a buisness and knew little about it (firsthand) other than research. And they did great....

ask anyone who's been around for a few years about "Windsor Airsoft Shop" and you'll get the exact opposite response
