If you're not certain about the battery make sure your charger goes up to 10.4v ... and what they said ^

The charger can adjust itself up to a certain voltage only.

And if the battery only gets a few miliamps, it is normal that the cables and battery get hot.

If I remember correctly, you can only do up to 9.6v with that charger. The next step is one that charge from 10.4v to 14.4v (These chargers come in 4 version, 1-5 cells, 6 to 8, 9 to 12 and finally 24v).

Get an other battery and try it with a good, known to be good battery. Also, the PSG-1 uses a pre-cock system. It means that you will only be able to shoot it with a fully charged pack.

Check on your charger. As I said, there is a few version of these "Smart Chargers"

It should be rated in cell count or voltage.

10.8v is 9 cells. If your charger can only go to 8 cells, then it won't be able to charge it.

Burning hot is between 50 and 70 degC for most people. (Hot tap water is around that). A battery can withstand up to 120-150 degC, not without damage however.
