Polishing gearbox

I read about someone polishing the piston rails in side the gearbox but never saw how or what it was done with. Can anyone enlighten me on this ?

Steel wool the superfine kind used to polish car rims.

I used 400 then 800 grit wet sandpaper. It leaves a super-smooth polish.

Yeah that's what got me interested in doing it. Just polished my new gearbox so we'll see how much better it performs.

I use what you're supposed to, Jewelers Rouge in a progressively finer cycle... My Mechbox is super shiny, and free of friction!

So what can I use? Last time I had the mechbox open I used steelwool. It did not have much of and effect. Next time I'll try the 800-1000 grit wet sand paper.
Is turtle wax of any use??? Or what else in the garage?

The thing I had to watch for is making sure the piston guides on the mechbox were not altered in shape or height due to excessive polishing. Pot metal seems rather soft to me.

I think the goal for me is to make the mechbox piston guides have much less friction, rather than make it look nice and shiny.

True, but shiny will be smooth hence less friction.

Unless yo uare using an aluminum piston I can't really see much use in polishing your piston rails. Just use a quality grease (I recommend Gunslick's Annhydrous Graphite Lube, $1.45 a tube, only really saying here because I see you are in Toronto and you have a Le Baron store in Mississauga). It won't gum up/dry out after a while like lithium grease does, and wil last a very long time (word is, from Greylocks of all people, is that it will polish your parts over time and usage).
