need a basic gun for shooting practice

So I basically just need an airsoft gun that I can use to shoot cans and such at my cottage. I just want something that is accurate and will go where I am aiming, it doesn't need to be electric or automatic. Preferably under $150 as well.

For that price, you're probably looking at an airgun. Not an airsoft gun.

150 will get you nothing.

Get age verified if you're 18 years or older, If not. You're pretty much shit out of luck.

You'd be much better served with an airgun (pellet gun) than airsoft for target practice.

much much much much much much less expensive,
much much much much much much much much much easier to find.

How exactly do I get age verified? If it's a long process I don't need to know where to get them as long as I know the name/brand.

Is $150 really not enough to even get a basic spring-powered rifle? I seem to recall my friend having a manual spring-powered gun that he got for under $100 that didn't seem that bad. Then again I don't really know anything about airsoft guns.

Its not, you set up an arrangement with a local verifier (Which is as common as fat kids at a fast food resturant in your area)

You spend 5 minutes or more with the verifier, talk about the sport, educate yourself, and give your date of birth, name and username to the verifier.

A couple weeks later you get access to the classifieds. Simple as that. You're not paying for anything other than the gas required to drive there.

And when we say 150 isn't enough. We mean it. Anything below that price is generally really low quality and not worth the money in the long run. If you invest in a real airsoft gun you'll notice quite the improvement in quality and perfomance.

Keep in mind, a 'low cost' AEG runs anywhere from 250 - 500 dollars. Actual spring rifles go for around 350 - 500 to even +1000. And this is bone stock (Not including upgrades, which is more of an investment.)

If you're looking to plink, buy an airgun. Best advice we can give to you.

I'm trying to avoid anything that fires metal, but I guess i'll just head to the local Canadian Tire and see what I can find.

you can get shitty cansoft guns at a lot of places. It'll maybe last 200 shots and perform as good as shooting a rubber band. but it's in your price range.

Any reasons for that?
Metal means more weight, more weight means better velocity/precision in the case of an airgun, so aiming actually does what it should: put the projectile at the right place.

An airsoft gun is nowhere as precise, unless heavily upgraded, and again... It's more like shooting peas with a straw...

I shoot reel steel, I've been firing air rifles since about 10 and I've been airsofting since 2005. Do NOT buy an airsoft gun for plinking cans and "target" shooting, they're crap for that, just go buy a .177 cal air rifle.

There's the Red Ryder air rifle for $45 at CT.

Remington, Walther, and Crosman all make some pretty decent air rifles in the $150 range.

Then you can go Benjamin and Beeman if you want to spend some cash, and if you want to spend even more get a PAL and buy Gamo, Air Force, or Hammerli.

Don't get a cheap airsoft pistol. You'll be severely disappointed especially at anything beyond 5 metres. Also, those guns usually break after a while and when they do it's best to just toss them in the garbage, they're definitely not worth repairing nor are there repair parts that I know of for them. Whether it's 100 shots or 10,000 shots it will break whereas with "real" airsoft guns they generally last and there are a host of repair and upgrade parts available.
