I bought a dollar store gun to test it out on and it worked great. but i could easily scratch the paint off with my nail. I sanded the surface and cleaned it with rubbing alch. but i didnt prime it.
Is there a way to seal this paint without making it shinny? or should i really consider getting a metal and plastic primer for my vsr?

I seal my paintjobs with semigloss lacquer, brings out the colours more, and even though a bit on the shiny side, it's not that bad. If you don't want shine, just rub all the painted surfaces with really fine steel wool, it will dull it. Just do it very lightly and watch out for edges and corners, you'll easily take the paint off.
