that sounds like the actual gear that moves the tappet plate and piston (forgot what it's called) may have grown? and extra piece or more believably, if you have one of the ones with those adjustable weights(i think thats what they are, well at least, they move) then one of those could be sticking out and catching the tappet plate and pulling it back.
