here's what I did:

I filed the dark grey areas. considering the original angle of the slide catch, it's no wonder it slipped easily. What I did might lead to other problems...I'll find out eventually.

Pulling the slide to release it after inserting a new mag instead of pushing the slide catch down might also help reduce the wear on it.
