IMHO/IIRC THE main concern are ricochet and off axis shots. The reason most places ask for PB approved and tac goggles (besides the fact they are active paintball places and paint can be bad if it splatters on your face) is because they have a seal around the face that is considerably hard to penetrate. If you have safety glasses, they usually leave a gap and a BB coulld (theoretically) make it's way in there, ricochet around and cause some serious damage.
