Pants sizing. I wear a 34" so I'd get a 34". That's a lie actually. Because I'm a 34" I'd get one that could go up to 36", in case I play right after Thanks Giving. But seriously though I always get mine mildly big, as they usually have tightening ability and I wear them with a belt.
