Could it be that the wiring is screwed up somewhere? ie. Apply power and the wires heat up slightly dislodging the continuity of the wire then when it cools down it goes back? Think flow soldering or the bake your 360 in the oven trick.

Maybe there's a section of wire that's just slightly hanging off somewhere at the connector side.
