I chose my username in 2001, and I've had to live with it ever since. It's especially awful in real life when you have to say your username (I've been on/created several communities over the last decade). You can usually avoid it with a "oh hey, how about you give me your username instead, and I'll message you".
Getting AVed was pretty embarrassing. It's one thing to have to casually mention your username, but when you're standing in front a guy that is holding your ID that fully represents you in the real world, staring you up and down to make sure you match the picture, it's pretty awkward to meekly tell him you're some powerful force of nature with a mysterious X at the end.
