You need to put more voltage into a battery than what it's output is in order to charge it.
An 8.4v battery typically charges at ~9.6v, and around 11.0-11.5v for a 9.6v
And all NiMH batteries will get hot when charging, depending on how you set your delta peak (topping off the battery), they could be REALLY freaking hot.
There's nothing wrong with your charger.
