Worse than useless; on some GBBs the extra weight on the front of the outer barrel will cause the rear of the outer barrel to rub against the inside top of the slide, creating friction and slowing or even stopping the slide in mid-cycle.
But on an AEG, if it's not cover for a longer inner barrel, it just looks cool. And a gun that goes "whump, whump, whump" should look like it's
supposed to sound like that!
