I've stripped the finish off the wood and have confirmed that it is Chinese beech. A lower grade and less dense beech than is used on Norinco firearms with some knots and wood filler. It will still make a nice natural oil finished rifle. The oil finish will be much more durable. If you didn't like to see the knots and filler you could easily stain the stock dark then oil so you get the same strength of finish that will be impervious to chipping and peeling (unlike the original finish).
