Hawt Vltor sight from King Arms

I was looking at King Arm's new release page and I spotted this new accessory:

This is the kind of flush-sitting gas block/flip up front sight I've been looking for. Good job King Arms!

Lakonian February 14th, 2008 23:57

zinc alloy? Don't touch it. Garbage....

stokes February 14th, 2008 23:59

Make it steel! Damn it.

What makes zinc alloy garbage? I don't know shit about metals.

They're cast (just like a mechbox shell) and are prone to breaking. Not that a front sight is under any real strain, but using the sling swivel is a point of strain for sure. Especially if the gun is heavy.

Due to cost limitations, the majority of airsoft parts are made of zinc alloy. It's pretty rare to find anything in airsoft manufactured from a single piece of billet aluminum stock (nevermind steel... that's almost non-existent in airsoft.) Off the top of my head, the only things I can think of are the Pro-Win gearboxes and some select metal slides/frames that cost almost $200 for the slide alone.
Zinc-aluminum type alloys are typically used for die-casting where there are economical constraints. This allows for the manufacturing of complex designs at cheap prices. That isn't to say it's garbage... using the sling swivel should be okay, but don't be expecting to hang your body weight from that single point of contact.

As a point of reference, the version of this sight sold by Unicorn is only $28USD listed on UNCompany's web site. (I have a feeling it is made by the same factory that King Arms is sourcing from.) Compare that price to the real steel item, which is machined from tool-grade steel... and costs a whopping $225USD. *barf*

You're right, it's probably not a big deal. Still, compared to all the high quality sights out there... this is easily overlooked.

Cassius February 15th, 2008 11:10

kos, can you name a few of these sights please? I may be looking to get something to replace my PRI flip-up.

ILLusion February 15th, 2008 11:28

For a plain old sight, there's no need to go with such a tough metal. I can't see any need to go above die-casted zinc alloy for airsoft use, as there are no harsh recoil forces to deal with (unless you're after the added weight.)

Different story if it's potentially load-bearing as this VLTOR one is supposedly capable of. I personally still wouldn't use the sling mount on this VST-1 replica anyways, so the material is a non-issue for my uses.

Cassius, GRS makes a steel version of the PRI front flip up if that kind of thing gives you a hard-on, but they run around $60USD + shipping from overseas retailers. It's also a casted sight, as far as I can tell, despite being steel.

If you're looking for something machined from billet stock, you're wasting your time by looking at airsoft. Check out real steel... but expect to pay real steel prices and having to deal with fitment issues (the securing pins are located differently than airsoft.)

Thanks mate. I already have a PRI and am getting tired of the look of it. I'm wondering what else would look good..

+1 dude...even for real steel stuff i cant imagine hanging your weapon off one of your sights. i know there are alot of setups (this vltor one included) that allow you to do so but just imagine taking fire and your reddot/scope fails and your BUIS isnt zeroed anymore due to some running/jumping/etc. that would really suck man...

leblanc74 February 16th, 2008 02:43

you can also tell by the color of this VST, this clone is only black while the real one has 2 tones...

I prefer the real thing and I am strongly considering it... I saw at a few places for 200$ that is able to ship to Canada, now just need to find those places again...

pOkiE February 16th, 2008 08:09

thats pretty pricey for an airsoft gun man...but then again ive seen your collection haha
