What do you mean? You should totally agree with this. Can you imagine how much money you will make for fixing this dumb idea?

Literally what my profile picture is doing.

Do you even know what is a structural integrity?

R.I.T.Z February 22nd, 2018 19:19

you have significantly weakened the gearbox in a high stress area

I think it would hold up pretty well under m90-m120 weight springs as long as the spring guide is well supported by the buffer tube screw. I tried out similar on a shitty ka gearbox that’s cracked that’s most likely going to go into a reaper hpa build.

It would work better with a shell with no tab cutouts, so you could slot the top wide enough to slip the spring & guide out, but retain the sides to support tail of the gb shell for the spring guide

the stronger spring I would put in it would be M110. that should be more than enough for CQB games. Aside from gaming it, I am considering to run 1000 bbs through it. Once done, I will report back on whether it is holding or not.

RainyEyes February 23rd, 2018 07:12

I think it will hold. Most of the stress is at the front of the gearbox. The rear is more meant for the guides on the piston to keep them in alignment. I doubt the back will blow before the front does.

After shooting 1268 bbs, the gearbox itself is still holding nicely. BUT, there was a failure:

the tail of the piston, the part with thick tooth, broke off. Now I wonder what that may be and how I can prevent it from happening again before going part shopping.

Seems legit

Update on the modification:
After 3000 bbs, 1278 on sunday at siege, I can say this modification is indeed stable. I believe using a vfc reinforced gearbox shell was a wise idea. I only tested M110 ace1airsoft spring which achieves 340 fps on this built.

The issues I ran into during testing were:
1. broken piston: this happened because I did not stabalize the spring guide. making sure the spring guide is screwed in seemed to have solved this problem

2. hopup mess up: This was really my fault, i literally dropped my gun mid game and something went off with the hopup and fps start varying from 50 to 340. opening an reclosing hopup fixed this issue.

At this point I am considering the same modification on my other gun but that should wait for when I got free time.
