ICS Quick Change Spring

I had been thinking about getting an ICS - mainly for the split gear box and easier spring changes. However, even with the split gear box, I saw that you still needed to take apart the upper gear box to get at the spring.

Then I came across this video (from the ICS booth at the 2011 ShowShot) showing a new design for the ICS split gear box, allowing you to change the spring in less than a minute.

Does anybody have an ICS rifle with this feature? I've looked on the ICS manufacturer's web page and it doesn't mention this feature. I wonder which ICS rifles will come with this feature.... Hopefully, it will include an M4 with RIS rails (and battery in the extendable crane stock).

I saw that there and love the design. It's brand new and isn't out of the manufacturing pipe for NA as far as I could tell at the show.

I don't think any are on the market yet, but it does look interesting. Gotta wonder how durable it'll be though...

You know, you can buy a used upper gearbox for about 25$ on ASC you set them up according to your need (piston, head, guide, spring and cylinder) and you switch them arround in seconds... that is the beauty of the split gear box.

I have 2 gearbox one @ about 375 fps I use outside (417 fps with M120)
and one @ about 335 fps I use inside (350 fps max restriction)

and voila!

Cheers

Pete

I'm hoping it will be compatible with existing ics lower gearboxes, so that I only have to buy the upper to upgrade...

The ICS l85 requires you to remove 3 pins then you can pull off the butt and pry the body apart from the back, remove the full gearbox and pull a pin to release the spring guide, switches take very little time, maybe 2 minutes a a good speed. Forgot to mention, there is 3 holes in the spring guide to change the guns FPS by about 40 with the same spring.

Man I wish every gun had a quick change closed gearbox spring change feature.

Someone in town just bought an ICS L86 LSW and it has a quick spring adjustment feature to it - you can pick 3 different tension settings to achieve different velocities with the same spring.

cjboi January 25th, 2011 14:20

do they already have this out in the market? I mean, dont they already have the galil? Do they come equipped with quick spring adjustment and 2 round burst?

Sportco January 26th, 2011 11:57

What i've been wondering is why since the quick release thing is a potential screw in system don't they make a tension ajuster!!!

For example plus a 1/4 turn would bump up FPS by plus 5

So we could tune the AEG to be within 5 FPS of maximum site velocity and stop messing arround with springs for a mear 15 fps

Cheer

It already takes less than 5 minutes to do a spring change with the current split gearbox. This just makes me giggle with excitement.

I can see this potentially being a problem by field owners who are strict on FPS limits. Chrono the gun with .2's on the lowest setting, go out in the field and hide behind a building while you crack open the split gearbox, make a few adjustments and boom, you're now over the FPS limits. Not saying that EVERYONE will do this, but it has the potential of happening.

What are your thoughts about this?

Good point...

Build a better idiot proof system and trust them to come up with a better idiot! :D

The only fix to that would be the certainty of permanent system wide banishment if caught (( safety rules CANNOT be broken or disregarded))

Conker January 26th, 2011 13:16

Happened before. The guy was banned.

As simple as that. Your shots seem unreasonably strong? Well let us chrono it... if your gun is just that awesome without being over the limit then good for you. If you swapped the spring... then good bye.

Maybe, but there's always potential for some dumbass to do something stupid - snipers sneaking in aluminum BBs, people chronographing GBBs with duster then switching to propane in the field, players hiding "hot" handguns in their kit and then using them in the game, etc.

Overall I like the quick change spring idea. I also like the idea of adjusting the spring guide to quickly (and legitimately) tune velocity for play conditions.

I can't believe someone could do something so stupid. But hey, like anything else in life, the sport attracts all sorts.
